ABU DHABI,— Lunate, an Abu Dhabi-based investment firm, has named Mohammed Hassan Alsuwaidi, the United Arab Emirates’ investment minister, as its executive chairman and managing partner. The company said Alsuwaidi will lead its global growth strategy and work to expand its international presence.
Lunate, which manages $115 billion in assets and describes itself as an independent, partner-led alternative investment company, said in a statement that Alsuwaidi will focus on deepening relationships with institutional investors and accelerating the firm’s expansion worldwide.
The company aims to more than double its assets under management over the next five years.
Alsuwaidi previously served as the founding CEO of ADQ, Abu Dhabi’s third-largest sovereign wealth fund, which oversees more than $263 billion in assets spanning energy, infrastructure, healthcare, and food and agriculture sectors.
His tenure at the fund has now concluded, the statement said.
According to Lunate managing partners Khalifa Al Suwaidi, Murtaza Hussain, and Seif Fikry, Alsuwaidi’s skill in growing businesses at scale, attracting global capital, and sustaining growth will play a key role in the company’s ongoing push to become a major global investment firm.
Lunate is a subsidiary of Chimera Investment, which forms part of a larger business network overseen by Sheikh Tahnoun bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Sheikh Tahnoun is chairman of ADQ, the UAE’s national security adviser, and brother of President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed.
He also chairs the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, the emirate’s largest wealth fund. The firm’s co-managing partners also hold stakes in Lunate.
Abu Dhabi holds the majority of the UAE’s oil reserves and is home to several sovereign wealth funds, which together manage estimated assets exceeding $1.5 trillion.
In October, Lunate and HPS Investment Partners, a BlackRock-owned firm, announced plans to create a new investment platform targeting major North American and European companies, with Lunate committing at least $1 billion to the initiative, the statement added.
