DUBAI,— Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has started commercial operations for autonomous driverless taxis in the Umm Suqeim and Jumeirah areas, the Government of Dubai Media Office reported.
The service is offered to the public through the Uber and Apollo Go apps, in partnership with autonomous vehicle providers WeRide (Nasdaq: WRD) and Apollo Go.
WeRide vehicles are now accessible via the Uber app, while Tawasul Transport manages the fleet and oversees operations.
Apollo Go, a subsidiary of Baidu, delivers autonomous mobility services through the Apollo Go app in collaboration with the Dubai Taxi Company to support local operations.
The launch is part of Dubai’s broader strategy to integrate smart mobility solutions into its transport network. Officials said the service underlines the emirate’s commitment to turning strategic plans into operational projects.
The RTA said the rollout strengthens Dubai’s position as a hub for global autonomous driving companies.
It cited the city’s advanced infrastructure, clear strategic direction, and smart transport systems as key factors supporting the expansion of driverless mobility.
Residents and visitors in Umm Suqeim and Jumeirah can book rides on both the Uber and Apollo Go apps.
These neighborhoods are among Dubai’s busiest and are located near popular public beaches, allowing users to access autonomous taxis for everyday travel.
The initial phase deploys 100 self-driving vehicles across the city, with plans to gradually expand the fleet in the coming years.
The expansion is expected to meet growing demand for smart mobility services and support Dubai’s push toward advanced transport technologies.

Before commercial launch, the RTA conducted extensive operational trials to test autonomous vehicles on designated roads.
The tests evaluated system performance and ensured the vehicles could operate safely alongside regular traffic, meeting the highest safety standards.
Autonomous taxis use an integrated software system powered by artificial intelligence, high-definition maps, and deep learning algorithms.
The vehicles process real-time data, interact with dynamic traffic conditions, and navigate intersections, traffic signals, pedestrians, and other vehicles while fully following traffic regulations.
The operator’s fleet has recorded more than 150 million kilometers of safe driving and completed over 10 million autonomous trips in cities worldwide.
This experience has contributed to the development of scalable models for commercial deployment in Dubai.
