DUBAI,— Dubai International Airport and the Burj Al Arab hotel were damaged after Iranian retaliatory attacks struck parts of the Gulf and wider Middle East overnight, officials said on Sunday.

The Dubai media office said four people were injured at the airport. In a post on X, the office said a concourse at Dubai International DXB, sustained minor damage in an incident that was quickly contained. No further details were provided.

The media office later confirmed that a drone had been intercepted. Debris from the interception caused a minor fire on the outer facade of the Burj Al Arab hotel.

Dubai is the largest tourism and trade hub in the Middle East. Its airport is one of the busiest travel hubs in the world. The Burj Al Arab is one of the emirate’s best known landmarks.

The sail shaped hotel opened in 1999 on an artificial island off Jumeirah Beach and became a symbol of Dubai’s global luxury image.

On Saturday, a fire also broke out near another hotel on Palm Jumeirah Island, which is an artificial island in the city.

Aviation sources told Reuters that an overnight Iranian strike damaged one of the airport terminals.

Abu Dhabi Airports said in a post on X that an incident at Zayed International Airport in the UAE capital resulted in one death involving an Asian national and seven injuries. The post was later deleted.

In a separate statement, the Dubai media office said one of the berths at Jebel Ali Port caught fire due to debris from an aerial interception.

Iran launched missiles toward Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Doha. The cities are major aviation gateways linking east and west.

Airlines suspended flights across much of the Middle East on Saturday, including services to and from Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Flight tracking maps showed that airspace across large parts of the region was nearly empty.

The attacks extended beyond U.S. bases and interests, spreading across Gulf states and other areas in the Middle East, officials said.
