DUBAI,—Thousands of cyclists took over Sheikh Zayed Road on Sunday, temporarily transforming one of Dubai’s busiest highways into a cycling route as part of the annual Dubai 30×30 Fitness Challenge, authorities said.
Officials closed sections of the 12-lane expressway, also known as E11, to allow participants to ride safely.
The event attracted a record 40,327 cyclists to the sixth edition of this flagship initiative, a spectacular display of community spirit, the Government of Dubai Media Office said in a statement.
The challenge encourages residents to engage in at least 30 minutes of physical activity each day throughout November.
Riders of all ages passed by some of Dubai’s most recognized landmarks, including the Burj Khalifa and the doughnut-shaped Museum of the Future.
On a regular day, the highway is heavily congested, with traffic often backed up for miles, reflecting the city’s rapid population growth and expanding real estate market, municipal officials said.
The Dubai 30×30 challenge has grown in popularity since it was launched, drawing thousands of participants each year and highlighting the city’s efforts to promote healthier lifestyles.
Organizers said the event also provides residents a rare chance to enjoy the skyline and central landmarks from a different perspective.
