LONDON,— Dubai’s ruler arrived in the Scottish Highlands this week with a security convoy of about 60 vehicles as he prepared to mark his 77th birthday, The Daily Mail reported.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who has led the United Arab Emirates as prime minister since 2006, traveled to his Inverinate Estate, a 63,000-acre property near Kyle of Lochalsh, ahead of the milestone birthday next week.
He was seen arriving at Inverness Airport looking somber, though he later appeared more relaxed while hiking with family members and friends.
The sheikh has owned the estate for more than two decades. The property includes three large houses, a cottage, two lodges and three helipads.
To help him move around once he is there, three helicopters and roughly a dozen Range Rovers are kept on site for his personal use.
Residents of Kyle of Lochalsh, a village of about 590 people, said they could not miss the visit.

A procession of roughly 20 Range Rovers and 30 Mercedes-Benz vans carrying staff and security personnel pulled into the local village hall.
One resident said they had never before seen so many vehicles with tinted windows, or such heavy security.
The resident added that the sheikh rarely visits in person but has shared photos on social media showing his interest in hillwalking and boating, and guessed that he would spend his time on similar activities during this trip, accompanied by a large group of aides.
Last April, the sheikh received planning approval to add at least a ninth house to the estate. Local residents said the expanding property increasingly resembles a small village stretching along the shoreline.
In 2024, he also won approval for an 11 bedroom mansion and a separate five bedroom home. All of his planning requests have gone through his company, Smech Properties Ltd, which submits applications to Highland Council.

Because of the size of his travel party, Transport Scotland raised concerns about wear on local roads from future visits and asked for details on how often the sheikh and his group planned to travel north, along with an estimate of the cumulative effect on traffic.
In response, representatives for the sheikh said that most visits to the property are made by coach or helicopter, backed by a fleet of six four by four vehicles used for shooting parties and other outings.
They said no records exist showing how often visits occur or how long they typically last.
The estate has also drawn scrutiny from planning authorities. In November, the sheikh received retroactive permission for solar panels that had been installed without prior approval.
He applied to Highland Council for backdated permission covering several changes made at the property.

The UAE prime minister, whose fortune is estimated at 14.6 billion pounds, has spent heavily upgrading the estate in the Wester Ross region, which he has held for more than 20 years.
Records obtained through a freedom of information request show Inverinate Estate is among the most common destinations for private flights departing Inverness Airport.
Over the past three years, there were 29 departures and 42 arrivals linked to the estate, along with three arrivals and four departures connecting to Abu Dhabi. Despite the scale of the property and its infrastructure, the sheikh is said to visit only occasionally.
He earns the bulk of his wealth through real estate investment and is widely regarded as one of the most influential property developers in the world.
