DUBAI,— United Arab Emirates President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan held a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu following new Iranian missile and drone attacks on the UAE, as regional tensions remained high.
The call drew attention as a sign of coordination between the UAE and Israel during an ongoing conflict. Regional allies also expressed support for the UAE after the latest strikes.
The state news agency WAM reported that Sheikh Mohamed received calls from several regional leaders, including Netanyahu, who condemned what they described as Iranian attacks on civilians and civilian facilities in the UAE.
The leaders affirmed solidarity with the UAE and support for steps taken to protect its security and stability, and to ensure the safety of its citizens, WAM said.
The UAE defense ministry said on Tuesday that its air defense systems were responding to missile and drone attacks from Iran. Iran’s joint military command denied carrying out any such operations against the UAE in recent days.
The reported attacks marked the second consecutive day of incidents, following about four weeks of relative calm after the United States announced a ceasefire.
In a statement, the UAE foreign ministry described the attacks as a serious escalation and a direct threat to national security. It said the UAE reserved its full and legitimate right to respond.
On Monday evening, the UAE said its air defenses were intercepting missile and drone threats while firefighters worked to contain a fire at a major oil industry zone. Authorities said the blaze followed a drone strike believed to have come from Iran.
According to the reports Israel deployed its Iron Dome missile defense system to the UAE, marking its first use outside Israel, with Israeli personnel involved in operations.
The report also said Israel sent a version of its Iron Beam laser-based defense system to support the UAE.
This is not the first time Netanyahu has contacted Emirati leaders. In 2023, Sheikh Mohamed confirmed the UAE’s commitment to relations with Israel during a call with Netanyahu that focused on strengthening ties, UAE state media reported.
