DUBAI,— Spain’s Nacho Elvira claimed a dramatic victory at the Dubai Invitational on Sunday, edging out his rivals in the tournament’s closing moments.
Elvira, ranked 190th in the world, held his composure while Ryder Cup stars Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry struggled on the 18th hole, securing a one-shot win for his third European Tour title.
He finished with a final-round 69, ending the tournament at 10 under par.
Lowry, who had been in contention on the final hole, found trouble after hitting his approach into a greenside bunker and then into water beyond the green, making a double-bogey 6 and finishing two strokes behind Elvira.
McIlroy, who started the 18th hole one shot behind Lowry, drove into the rough, followed by an approach shot that landed in a bunker, and was unable to save par. Both McIlroy and Lowry finished tied for third.
New Zealand’s Daniel Hillier finished alone in second place at 9 under after shooting a 65 in the final round.
Elvira celebrated the win alongside his wife and children, saying the victory was “unbelievable” and that nothing could compare to the moment.
He started the final round in the lead and extended it to three shots after a birdie on the seventh hole. Despite back-to-back bogeys on holes eight and nine, he managed to save par on the 10th and remained in contention.
With about an hour remaining, five players, including Hillier, McIlroy, Lowry, Marcus Armitage, and Elvira—shared the lead at 9 under. Lowry briefly took solo control with a long birdie putt on the 15th, but could not maintain it.
Elvira said he only became aware of Lowry’s final-hole struggles after completing his own second shot on the 18th, admitting he felt “a little nervous” even with a clear path to victory.
Lowry was attempting to capture his first European Tour title since September 2022, and McIlroy, who completed his career Grand Slam by winning the Masters last year, started the final round with five straight birdies from the ninth hole. However, he finished the final five holes at one over par.
The European Tour will remain in the region for its next event, the Dubai Desert Classic at Emirates Golf Club, which begins Thursday.
