MOSCOW,— Russian President Vladimir Putin told UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Monday that he is ready to raise complaints about Iranian attacks on UAE soil directly with Tehran, Reuters reported, citing the Kremlin
The Kremlin said the UAE president confirmed that his country is not being used as a base to attack Iran, making any Iranian strikes on the UAE unjustified.
Putin told Al Nahyan in a phone call that he could send these concerns to Tehran and provide assistance to help stabilize the overall situation in the region, the statement added.
The two leaders agreed that an immediate ceasefire is needed and that diplomatic channels should be reopened, the Kremlin said.
Putin also expressed regret that efforts to address Iran’s nuclear program had been disrupted by “an unprovoked act of armed aggression” carried out by the United States and Israel.
Dubai is a key destination for Russian tourists, and the Kremlin said Putin thanked the UAE leader for helping Russian citizens during the current tensions.
On Saturday, the United States and Israel launched airstrikes on several locations in Iran, killing numerous senior officials, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iran retaliated with missile strikes on Gulf countries, including the UAE.
The Iranian attacks have struck civilian targets such as hotels and airports, causing extensive disruption.
The strikes have created the largest business disturbance in the region since the COVID-19 pandemic, shutting airports, stopping port activity, and affecting markets across the Gulf.
In another phone conversation, Putin spoke with Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isai Al Khalifa, saying that Russia intends to take every possible step to help bring stability to the Middle East after the U.S. and Israeli strikes in Iran.
The Kremlin noted that the unfolding events pose risks to the safety of several Arab countries with which Russia maintains friendly ties.
The Russian president assured that Moscow is ready to actively use all resources at its disposal to support efforts aimed at calming tensions and stabilizing the region, TASS news agency reported.
