DUBAI,— Flydubai cancelled at least 17 scheduled flights on Friday between Dubai and several Iranian cities, including Tehran, Shiraz and Mashhad, according to the Dubai Airports website.
The flight cancellations came as Iran experienced a nationwide internet blackout that began on Thursday and continued into Friday.
Authorities imposed the restrictions while responding to protests that have expanded across the country.
Demonstrations linked to economic hardship began in late December and have affected public services and infrastructure, according to official statements and regional reports.
A spokesperson for flydubai confirmed the cancellations, saying all flights to Iran scheduled for Friday had been called off.
The airline said it would continue to monitor developments and adjust its schedule as needed. No reason was given for the disruption.
Other regional airlines also suspended services. Turkish media reported that Turkish Airlines cancelled 17 flights to Iranian destinations on Friday.
Turkey-based Ajet cancelled six flights, while low-cost carrier Pegasus Airlines also halted flights to Iranian cities.
Flight tracking information showed additional cancellations in the Gulf region.
At least two flights scheduled between Doha and Tehran on Friday were cancelled, according to data published on the Hamad International Airport website in Qatar.
