ABU DHABI,— Global investment firm KKR (Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co.) has purchased a minority interest in the company that leases natural gas pipelines from Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, the firm said Wednesday. Financial terms of the deal were not released.
KKR stated the acquisition was made through accounts it manages, structured to match the investment’s duration with long-term capital.
The move follows KKR’s earlier involvement in the region. In 2019, the New York-based firm, alongside BlackRock, became the first foreign asset managers to buy into ADNOC’s oil pipeline network.
That stake was sold last year to Abu Dhabi investment group Lunate.
ADNOC continues to hold ownership and operate the pipelines despite the partnership. Gulf governments, including the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, have increasingly turned to international institutional investors to secure additional capital while keeping operational control of key infrastructure.
In August, Saudi Aramco signed an $11 billion lease and leaseback deal with a consortium led by Global Infrastructure Partners, a firm partly owned by BlackRock, for its Jafurah gas processing facilities. Kuwait’s state energy company also announced plans to revive a similar pipeline leasing project.
KKR, which manages more than $90 billion in infrastructure assets worldwide, expanded its regional presence this year by naming retired U.S. General David Petraeus as chairman for the Middle East.
The company also invested in Dubai-based Gulf Data Hub, one of the region’s largest data center operators. KKR and the company said they would commit over $5 billion to expand data center capacity.
