Dubai’s DXB Set to Fall Out of Top Five Airports

DUBAI,— Dubai’s long run atop the world airport rankings has come to an end. New passenger data show South Korea’s Incheon International Airport has claimed the title of world’s busiest airport for international travel.

Preliminary figures from the Airports Council International (ACI) put Incheon’s international passenger count at 38.4 million for the first half of the year, the BBC reported.

Heathrow Airport in London followed close behind with 37.79 million passengers. Singapore’s Changi Airport rounded out the top three with 34.53 million.

For the past two years, Dubai International Airport (DXB) held the number one position in full year rankings, claiming the top spot in both 2024 and 2025.

This year’s numbers tell a different story, with Dubai projected to drop out of the top five airports entirely.

The rankings have shifted quickly. Heathrow sat in fifth place in 2024, then slipped to seventh in 2025. Incheon’s rise has been even more striking, climbing from 12th place in 2024 and 13th in 2025 to the top spot now.

Airport officials pointed to the US Iran conflict as a key factor behind the surge.

Since fighting broke out in February 2026, Iran has struck many targets in the United Arab Emirates, including major airports, seaports, hotels, residential areas, and oil facilities in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Travelers who once relied on Middle East hubs have been steering clear of them, and many passengers who previously connected through Dubai en route to Europe are now flying through Incheon, according to the airport’s operating corporation.

That change in travel patterns pushed transfer passenger numbers up 18% from the same period last year.

Passengers transferring at Incheon with final stops in Europe saw an even sharper rise, jumping 63.2% to reach 210,000 travelers.

Recent upgrades to the airport’s infrastructure also played a role, officials said, giving Incheon the capacity to absorb the added traffic.

The airport, which first opened its doors in 2001, now links travelers to 158 international destinations.

That total tops other major Asian hubs, including Hong Kong International Airport with 139 destinations, Shanghai’s Pudong Airport with 92, and Tokyo’s Narita Airport with 86.

Kim Beom-ho, acting president of the Incheon airport corporation, credited the milestone to backing from the South Korean government, support from the public, and the efforts of airport workers.

He said the corporation now plans to sharpen its focus on passenger convenience as it works to hold on to the top ranking.
