Emirates to offer high speed Starlink Wi-Fi on A380 Aircraft
DUBAI,— Emirates has fitted its first Airbus A380 superjumbo with Starlink satellite internet system, the airline announced Monday, promising passengers speeds far beyond anything previously available on the aircraft.
The carrier said in a statement that three Starlink antennas have been installed on the aircraft, capable of providing the plane’s cabin with more than 2 gigabits per second of bandwidth.
Early internet systems on the A380 delivered less than 1 megabit per second across the whole jet, meaning the new setup is roughly one thousand times faster.
Certification and installation took place in Newquay, United Kingdom, and the aircraft has since returned to Dubai.
Additional A380s are scheduled for Starlink fitting throughout 2026, the airline said. Emirates mentioned that installation work will also start at its own engineering base in Dubai to speed up the process.
The Wi-Fi service will be free for all passengers and will be available in every cabin class.
Travelers will be able to stream video, play games, browse the internet, and work remotely on personal devices during flights.
The airline said Live TV streaming over Starlink is planned for a future phase, beginning on personal devices before being added to seatback screens.
The A380’s double-decker design required a custom engineering approach, Emirates said.
The jet carries more passengers than the Boeing 777, so its Starlink setup includes additional wireless access points and the extra antenna that the 777 configuration does not use.
The airline said the system is built to deliver strong performance across both decks.
Emirates said more than 650,000 passengers have already flown on its Starlink-equipped aircraft since the technology was first introduced across 25 Boeing 777-300ER jets.
The Starlink expansion is part of a wide-ranging fleet upgrade program the airline has been carrying out.
Emirates said 93 aircraft have gone through full refurbishment, with new Premium Economy seating, improved Business Class products, refreshed First Class suites, updated Economy Class cabins, and entertainment systems offering more than 6,500 channels.
In mid-2025, Emirates opened what it called the Centre of Hospitality Excellence, an $8 million facility used to train its 25,000 cabin crew members in customer service and hospitality skills.
