BANGKOK,— UAE swimmer Hussein Shawky won gold in the men’s 50-meter freestyle on Tuesday at the 12th Asian Age Group Swimming Championships, adding a fresh continental title to the country’s growing list of aquatic honors.
Shawky, an Egyptian national who trains with the UAE team and studies at GEMS Wellington Academy in Dubai, took the top spot two days after earning silver in the 50-meter butterfly, a result that stood as the UAE’s opening medal of the tournament.
He closed out his participation with the gold finish, cementing his place among the region’s top young swimmers.
The result extends a pattern of strong showings by Shawky at Asian-level meets and points to continued growth for UAE swimming in youth competition, officials say, crediting national training and development initiatives for the progress.
Abdullah Al Wahaibi, recently named President of the UAE Aquatics Federation and head of the country’s delegation at the event, said the win reflects sustained investment in athlete development and teamwork among coaches, staff and swimmers.
“We congratulate our wise leadership and UAE sport on this new continental achievement, and we congratulate our champion Hussein Shawky on his outstanding performance, which earned him the gold medal after strong competition against Asia’s top swimmers,” Al Wahaibi said.

“This accomplishment confirms that our national team development programs are moving in the right direction. We also commend all members of the UAE delegation for representing Emirati sport with distinction, and we look forward to achieving even more success in upcoming competitions.”
The Asian Age Group Championships, a leading regional event for young swimmers, splits competitors into three brackets: ages 13 to 14, 15 to 16 and 17 to 18.
This year’s tournament in Bangkok included swimming, diving, water polo and artistic swimming events.
China finished atop the overall medal count, while Shawky, competing in the 17 to 18 category, earned gold and silver for the UAE.
