ABU DHABI,— The U.S. Central Command said Tuesday it has reached a deal with the United Arab Emirates to launch their first joint task force aimed at speeding up military uses of artificial intelligence.
The new unit, called Task Force Talon Synapse, is expected to begin operating within the next few weeks.
Based in Abu Dhabi, it will bring together roughly 20 U.S. and Emirati specialists in artificial intelligence, data systems, and cybersecurity, CENTCOM said in a statement.
Adm. Brad Cooper, who leads CENTCOM, called the partnership a major step forward.
He said the effort would allow the U.S. and the UAE to quickly bring new AI tools to military forces and reflected a shared goal of using such technology efficiently and on a larger scale.
CENTCOM said Cooper and UAE National Security Adviser Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan first discussed creating the task force last year.
Command officials also met with artificial intelligence companies and UAE defense representatives during a regional visit last month.
According to CENTCOM, the task force will center on using AI to support intelligence work, safeguard key infrastructure, and track security conditions across the region.
