DUBAI,— Across the Arab world, a familiar palette of red, black, white and green waves above government buildings and city streets.

The flags of the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Kuwait, Palestine and Sudan may differ in shape and layout, but their colors carry a single message, a legacy of unity, struggle and pride rooted in a century-old revolution.

The four colors, often called the Pan-Arab colors, first appeared together during the Arab Revolt of 1916, when Arab forces rose against Ottoman rule during World War I.

The flag of the revolt, featuring black, white and green horizontal bands with a red triangle at the hoist, became a powerful symbol of freedom and self-determination for Arab peoples.

Each color represents a key chapter of Arab and Islamic history. Black stands for the Abbasid Caliphate and the banner of early Islamic conquests. White recalls the Umayyad dynasty and peace. Green symbolizes the Fatimid Caliphate and Islam itself.

Red represents the Hashemite family and the blood of those who fought for liberation. Together, the colors embody a shared heritage and common aspirations that continue to unite Arab nations.

When new Arab states emerged throughout the 20th century, many turned to the revolt flag as a foundation for their own designs.

Jordan added a seven-pointed white star symbolizing faith and unity. Palestine kept the same pattern as a declaration of national identity.

The UAE’s flag features a vertical red band representing strength and the bond among its seven emirates.

Kuwait designed its flag with a black trapezoid at the hoist, while Sudan adopted a green triangle for prosperity and hope.

Today, the Pan-Arab colors endure as more than a design choice. They represent a sense of shared identity that crosses borders and generations.

Even in a region marked by political divides, the same four colors continue to wave as reminders of common history, cultural pride and a vision of unity that still resonates across the modern Arab world.
