DUBAI,— A liquefied natural gas tanker managed by Abu Dhabi National Oil Company has crossed the Strait of Hormuz and is now near the west coast of India, ship-tracking data reported Monday by Reuters showed.
If confirmed, it would be the first loaded LNG carrier to pass the waterway since the Iran war began on Feb. 28, 2026.
ADNOC did not immediately respond to a request for comment, according to Reuters.
The 136,357-cubic-meter vessel operated by ADNOC Logistics & Services was last tracked in the Gulf on March 30.
Data from ICIS LNG Edge, MarineTraffic and LSEG show it later appeared off western India after weeks without signal, suggesting a transit through the strait.
Ships in the region have increasingly used evasive tactics, including turning off transmitters or broadcasting false identification numbers, as tensions rise and risks of seizure or attack increase.
“We have not yet heard official confirmation of the position,” said Alex Froley, senior LNG analyst at ICIS.
“There are cases of poor signal quality or vessels spoofing positions or using another ship identity number, but the position does not show clear signs of that.”
“If verified, the crossing would be a positive sign for the gas market but only early. One tanker would not ensure more traffic as conditions remain fluid,” Froley added.
Earlier in April, two Qatari LNG tankers attempted to pass the strait without success, while an empty Omani LNG carrier completed a crossing earlier this month.
