DUBAI,—The United Arab Emirates urged full implementation of a preliminary U.S.-Iran agreement to end their war, calling for an immediate halt to fighting and the restoration of free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, the country’s foreign ministry said Monday.
The ministry said in a statement that dialogue, diplomacy and respect for international law are critical following the signing of a U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding.
The UAE was directly affected by the conflict, with Iranian strikes hitting shipping vessels and energy infrastructure tied to the country during the war.
U.S. and Iranian officials confirmed they reached an agreement Sunday to end hostilities and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a preliminary deal that pushed oil prices lower but left the future of Tehran’s nuclear program to be resolved in follow-up negotiations.
The agreement, though still a framework, represents the most significant step toward ending a conflict that has killed thousands of people and disrupted global energy markets since joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran in February triggered the war.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced the deal on his Truth Social platform at approximately 5:30 p.m. Washington time, which is 2130 GMT, on Sunday.
His announcement came shortly after Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, whose government served as a mediator in the talks, stated early Monday local time that a deal had been reached.
The memorandum of understanding is set to be formally signed Friday in Switzerland.
Specific terms of the agreement were not immediately released. Sharif wrote on X that the deal calls for what he described as the immediate and permanent end of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon.
Iran’s deputy foreign minister, Kazem Gharibabadi, told reporters that a broader agreement covering the wider conflict would be negotiated during a 60-day ceasefire period. He said that period would also include talks on sanctions relief for Iran.
The status of Iran’s nuclear program would be addressed in those later discussions, sources previously told Reuters.
Trump said the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has effectively closed to shipping for months, would reopen Friday. He also said he had ordered the end of the U.S. blockade on Iranian ports.
“Ships of the World, start your engines. Let the oil flow!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
