DUBAI,— A British tourist faces criminal charges in Dubai after authorities discovered footage of Iranian missile strikes on his mobile phone, legal advocates reported this week, BBC reported.

The 60-year-old man was arrested under United Arab Emirates cyber-crime legislation that bars residents and visitors from distributing content deemed threatening to public security, said Detained in Dubai, an organization that offers legal support to foreigners in the country.

Officials from Britain’s Foreign Office confirmed they are providing assistance to the man’s relatives, though they declined to release further details about the case.

Radha Stirling, who leads Detained in Dubai, said prosecutors have charged 21 individuals collectively under the nation’s cyber-crime statutes for videos and online posts connected to the recent missile attacks.

Police discovered the missile strike footage during a search of the British national’s device, Stirling told reporters.

The formal accusations lack clarity, Stirling noted after examining court documents. “From reading the charge sheet, you cannot determine what specific violations occurred,” she said.

The organization has observed an increasing number of prosecutions under the country’s internet regulations.

Family members have been permitted contact with the detained man, Stirling added.

She suggested authorities are targeting individuals who record missile strikes to preserve the appearance of safety for the tourism industry.

Lana Nusseibeh, the UAE’s diplomatic representative to the European Union, acknowledged awareness of legal violations but said she lacked specific information regarding the British man’s detention.

Nusseibeh, previously the nation’s United Nations ambassador, stressed that legal procedures would be observed.

“This type of recording places individuals at risk,” Nusseibeh told the BBC. She recommended that citizens, residents, tourists and journalists adhere to established regulations.

She defended the legal framework governing information sharing, stating it exists to ensure public safety and maintain credible, reliable sources.

Government criticism remains prohibited in the UAE, where officials maintain tight restrictions on information leaving the country.

Amnesty International, the London-based human rights organization, has stated the UAE “has continued to criminalize freedom of expression through various laws and punish real or suspected government critics.”

Dubai has spent years building its image as an attractive location for international business professionals and tourists seeking luxury experiences.

Regional violence escalated into a second week following extensive US and Israeli military operations against Iran. The strikes resulted in the death of Iran’s supreme leader on Feb. 28.

Iranian forces have responded with attacks on Israel and American partner nations throughout the Gulf region, hitting both military and civilian locations, including energy infrastructure.

Damage has affected several prominent UAE structures.

The Fairmont The Palm hotel, located in the upscale Palm Jumeirah district, and the Burj Al Arab hotel both sustained damage during the attacks.

Air travel throughout the Middle East has experienced significant disruptions due to the ongoing conflict.
