DUBAI,— UAE Vice President Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed spoke by phone with Iranian parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf to discuss de-escalation efforts amid the ongoing Iran war, UAE state news agency WAM reported Wednesday.
The call came as relations between the two countries remain strained.
The UAE had previously condemned Iranian attacks on Gulf states as terrorist acts and called for the unconditional reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
Tensions in the region escalated after the United States and Israel conducted joint airstrikes against Iran on Feb. 28, 2026.
The UAE did not permit the United States to use its bases or airspace for those strikes. Despite that refusal, Iran launched thousands of missiles and drones at UAE and other Gulf countries.
Targets included major airports, seaports, hotels, residential neighborhoods and oil facilities in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, according to the report. Iranian strikes continued for over a month, with Gulf states intercepting dozens of projectiles daily.
In March 2026, the UAE Foreign Ministry called for firm action against Iran following repeated attacks on Arab countries, stating that coexistence with the Iranian regime is no longer possible.
Abu Dhabi’s state oil company ADNOC chief and UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber said on March 26, 2026, that any Iranian attempt to restrict movement through the Strait of Hormuz amounted to “economic terrorism.”
